Situated in the seclusion of the south-western core of the Vredefort Dome, about 20 km from Parys and 14 km from Vredefort, you will find the farm Deelfontein nestled between the high, concentric ridges of South Africa’s youngest World Heritage Site. It is the near-pristine environment, the interesting geology of this oldest and largest meteorite impact site, as well as numerous remains of the stone- and iron age inhabitants, the Boer War, and the early gold mining activities, that makes the Dome such a prime tourist destination.

Two comfortable farm houses, a rondavel, and a bush camp for those who want to escape from civilisation, offer accommodation at Deelfontein. The activities include swimming, hiking, mountain biking, stargazing and birdwatching. In the near vicinity, fly fishing, horse riding and river rafting are possible. Enjoy the quiet, the clean air, and the clear night skies!

The guest houses lie about 300 m apart, and the bush camp is situated 1 km away, and the rondavel in between, ensuring privacy. A total of 46 beds are available, and the establisment also offers two large seminar rooms for mini conferences and braai areas catering for large groups.

Activities:

Swimming is possible in a large 15m pool. A number of shorter and longer day routes invite the visitor to explore the area on foot. For a complete description of these routes, consult the website www.deelfontein.co.za. These trails form part of an extensive trail system comprising more than 60 km of trails, the Meteorite Hiking Trails.  An extensive network of mountain bike trails offer biking opportunities to the beginner as well as serious professonals, with easy-going jeep tracks and highly technical mountain trails. The Dome is a bird paradise, and on Deelfontein the trails take you to various habitats, ideal for the birding enthusiast. For a brochure of the bird species sighted in the Dome, and for guided birding tours, contact Jan Fourie at 056 811 2078. Likewise, there is ample opportunity for those interested in plants, reptiles and other animals. Make sure you bring your field guides! A complete tree list is available on the website. The clear night skies far away from the light pollution in the cities often surprise visitors who have not seen the Milky Way for a long time. For stargazing excursions, contact the owner. General information on the night skies above Deelfontein you will find at www.skyandtelescope.com.

In the immediate vicinity of Deelfontein various product owners provide a variety of activities, including fly fishing, horse riding, white water canoe trips on the Vaal rivier, and much more. Consult www.parys.co.za for more information.

Deelfontein Bush Camp

The bush camp at Deelfontein consists of three traditional thatched stone-and-mud huts, a lapa, and toilet facilities. The ruins of the old workers houses were renovated when the camp was built in 2006, and the other buildings added in amongst the existing trees and shrubs, ensuring that the camp blends in with the surroundings and affording privacy. The camp is accessible by vehicle.

Environmentally friendly materials and systems have been chosen to minimise the impact of tourism on nature, and to save energy and water. No electricity is available, but the accommodation is comfortable and offers an unforgettable experience in this pristine and secluded part of the Dome. Hot water is supplied by two donkeys, and electric light by batteries.

Two huts have two rooms sleeping 2 and 4 persons in bunk beds respectively, as well as a bathroom with shower and basin. A third hut is equipped with 2 bunk beds sleeping 4 persons. All rooms have tables and hangers. The huts are shielded from each other and the lapa by the indigenous vegetation. In the lapa you will find the barbeque facilities, cutlery, crockery and pots, a gas stove, gas fridge, sink and seating for 16 persons. The toilet building houses two modern composting toilets and two urinals. Please ensure that you study the directions for use! For cold winter days, a sauna provides seating for 10 persons and is fired by a wood stove.
