Private Holiday Nature Farm and Fly Fishing Destination in Machadodorp, Mpumalanga
The Lodge is situated on the banks of the upper Komati River between Machadodorp & Badplaas, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.
A stay at Mount Komati gives one the luxury of having a 1000ha farm all to one self, since there is only one camp, Ietermagog, sleeping 8 guests in 4 thatched bungalows, and the main house, Raaswater, also sleeping 8. However, we try to book out only one of the venues at a time, if possible at all.
Relaxing is what it's all about and how else with the calm surrounds of mountains all-round and "a river runs through it", pun intended. So yes, for the seasoned fly fishermen, the river teems with Big- & Small Scale Yellow Fish and, if you know your thing, even Fresh Water Eel. For the table there is a smallish, comfortable trout dam well stocked with Rainbow- & Brown Trout; from 500g pan-sized to nice, fat 3kg+ trophies!
Even with these good waters, it’s not all about the fishing here. The beauty, peace and quiet is what guests always comment on and this is the perfect spot for that break-away that city people are so desperately after these days. Now you don’t need to own and maintain your own farm, you can come here!
Accommodation consists of two types, either a Comfortable Camp setup or the newly introduced Luxury House.
The camp site has four two-bed units (some with bathroom, others not) sleeping eight guests.
There is a beautiful ablution block for the two smaller units, a kitchen and a communal outside lounge / braai.
A traditional African Boma for wood fires.
The Luxury House has two en suite double rooms, a loft, a lounge with fire place, a dining room with built in Jetmaster braai, a fully equipped kitchen and an outside wooden deck and braai area.
Accommodation consists of four separate units next to each other. One is a larger unit consisting of a bedroom, a bathroom with shower, toilet and basin, a small kitchen with fridge/freezer, electrical four plate stove, microwave and basic kitchen utensils and cutlery. It also has its own small dining room and lounge.
The second unit is a room with two extra-long single beds and en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and basin.
The two other units are both only a room with two standard single beds, two chairs and a table for reading and a cupboard. They make use of a rustic outside ablution unit with two showers, two toilets and two basins.
To complete the camp, there is a small kitchen with gas stove, sink, fridge/freezer and utensils like cutlery, pots, pans and the like next to the braai/lounge area.
Take a look at the picture gallery to get a better idea of the layout of the camp.
Luxury House Raaswater:
To cater for the diverse needs of our guests, the owners have decided to include the luxury eight bed house to the lodge portfolio.
There are two huge rooms, both en suite. The one room has a queen sized bed and its bathroom has a corner bath, basin and wc. The other room has a double bed and its bathroom has a double shower for two people, a basin and wc.
The lounge has a fire place and DSTV.
The dining room has a solid Oregon 8 seat dining table and built in Jetmaster braai.
The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge freezer, a microwave oven and a five burner Bosch safety gas stove and oven.
The kitchen opens up to the huge wooden deck via a long sliding door making it ideal for entertaining your friends.
A communal downstairs bathroom with shower, basin and wc serves either guests or those staying upstairs in the loft room.
The split loft has, on the one side, a double bed and two single beds all next to each other.
On the other side is a lounge with bay window looking out onto the mountains and cliffs.
Wild River Fly Fishing:
Situated on the banks of the Komati River - home of the sought after wild Yellow Fish - makes Mount Komati an exciting fly-fishing destination!
For the discerning fly fisherman looking for that extra challenge of the fight of a wild river Yellow Fish, there is about 2km of pure upper Komati river. Both Small- & Large Scale Yellows and also exciting fish like Fresh Water Eel live in these waters. One of the representatives of the leading fly fishing magazine in the country once caught a 7 pound Yellow here in our waters...
Still Water Fly Fishing:
For the table, there is a well-stocked trout dam with Rainbows and the big fighter Brown Trout, both ranging from 500g to trophies of 3.7kg's and more! We also stock Goldies, but the Fish Eagles tend to notice them fairly quickly.
A couple of game species have been re-introduced on the farm which gives a flavour of old world nature. Since there are no top predators left in the area to control the numbers of animals and to maintain the natural balance, it is necessary to manage this artificially. So from time to time, strictly bow hunting only is conducted on this property. This ensures the relaxed feel on the farm for the guests as well as the animals roaming free. The monies earned from this goes into the purchasing of other species to be re-introduced back into the area in order to re-establish the natural balance between grazers and browsers and also to make it more interesting for owners and guests alike.
This is the perfect spot to be used as a private hide-away; where the kids can still experience the freedom of outdoor country life and the adults can find the peace and quiet so dearly needed to switch off properly and rest out nicely.
Go for a leisure hike to discover the many ancient ruins on the farm dating from very different eras.
Alternatively take a goof in the river, try out the eco trail with your 4x4 vehicle or just enjoy a book lazing away in one of the hammocks available...
Other selected activities are on offer such as bird watching, picnics up in the mountains and hiking amongst a number of non-dangerous game species.
Special activities such as day spa with professional massages, manicures & pedicures can also be arranged. Please enquire for more.
The lodge is mainly self-catering, but a set menu will also be catered for on request.
Basic amenities like linen, bath- & face towels, pots & pans, kettles, microwave oven, electrical stove, gas stove and cutlery is provided for. Kindly use your own towels at the river.
The lodge operates on Escom electricity has hot water geysers and lights.
DSTV in the Raaswater lounge, but no TV sets in Ietermagog. (The manager most probably will kindly host you at his house for that all important game)
2G Vodacom, MTN & Cell C signal on most parts of the farm.
Guests need to bring all their consumables (drinks, snacks, food, coffees, teas, spices, charcoal, fire lighters and the like), none of these are provided for.
Don't forget the toothpaste and torches!
Wood & Charka:
As a fire safety measure, in the braai area at the braai/lounge at Ietermagog, you may only use briquettes or charcoal.
We have built a beautiful Boma where you may enjoy the good old bushveld wood fire under the stars. It is the only traditional African Boma in the world, I’m sure, that has a “men’s”!
The first wheel burrow of wood is included & more can be bought at R50 per wheel burrow load of Black Wattle.
