Middelburg/Groblersdal – MPUMALANGA

Korongo lies deep in a gorge, surrounded by high cliffs.  Visitors to Korongo will park at Ubethyan Lodge and be transported in a 4x4 game viewer to the Korongo camp.  This journey takes app 1.5 hours, so visitors are requested to arrive well before dark on a Friday afternoon.

There are 2 trails starting out from Korongo Camp.  The Yellow Trail, approximately 5.5 km and the Blue Trail is approximately 6.3 km.

The Korongo Trails are to be found in beautiful gorge rich in indigenous riverine forest and high vertical cliffs.  As there are Leopard present at Korongo the owners advise the use of a guide.

The Blue trail starts at the base camp, crossing a stream, and moving through the forest.  The trail becomes steeper till one reaches a plateau with fewer trees and shrubs, and some huge rocks and boulders.  Some more climbing offers lovely panoramic views of the rocky cliffs and valleys.  Many trees along the trail have name tags on that makes this an educational as well as fun experience.  The path zigzag’s down the mountain into the valley.  Thick ropes are provided at strategic points to help you down very steep inclines.  The last part of the trails takes you back to base camp through forest vegetation.

The Yellow trail also starts at the base camp, through the forest.  It overlaps a part of the Blue trail.  This trail however moves further into the valley, over streams and waterfalls before it climbs up the escarpment.

Additional trail from uBETHYAN Lodge:

The uBethyan Lodge is situated in an unfenced camp and you may enjoy a visit from white rhinos.

The Brown trail starting out from the lodge is a guided trail of 4.9 km in the game area.

This trail takes about 2 hours to complete. A ranger walks with groups because of the presence of White Rhino.  You may also see various antelope species and Wilde Beast while on the trail.
